Submit to Topka
Topka is looking for texts and illustrations for picture books and children's novels. Below you will find details of our requirements. Please read this before you send us your work.
Writers. Topka only publishes stories with the following characteristics:
- The central character, whether girl or boy, is member of a minority group (a different culture or race, an adopted child, a disabled child, an immigrant etc.) or lives in a "differently oriented" family (families resulting from a divorce, from adoption, blended families, multi-racial families, immigrant families, single-parent families, families with same sex parents etc.)
- The story is told from the point of view of this central character or of the central characters if there are more than one. This does not mean the story must be told in the first person.
- The story deals with a topic or conflict from everyday life, or has a fantasy element. It is NOT principally about the different lifestyle of the central character's family. Novels may deal with the problems or feelings arising from the difference, but should NOT be thought of as a way of disguising a lesson about diversity or coexistence.
- The language, subject matter and length of the story must be appropriate to the target age group. As a rough guideline: story books: up to 2,000 words; novels 6-9 years: 2,000-10,000 words; novels 9-12 years: 10,000-16,000 words. These word counts are only approximate.
Send your manuscript to propuestasATtopka.es Please do not send manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines.
Topka is looking for professionals with or without experience. We are interested in all styles and all media except those that are excessively abstract or adult such as pop and manga. Send your CV and a zip file sample of your work to propuestasATtopka.es. Please make sure that the sample shows how you develop a character through different situations.
